Traditional Neighborhoods
Miramar's Town Center has been designed as a Traditional Neighborhood. Traditional Neighborhoods are based on the classic town layout and designs that have been used successfully for centuries throughout this country and beyond.
Community
They are characterized by compact, pedestrian friendly communities of various populations; from the size of a village or town to a large City. Regardless of size, certain aspects are common throughout these communities. For example, it is expected that most of the necessities of daily life such as retail establishments (e.g., grocery stores, restaurants), services, employment, entertainment, and civic facilities will be within proximity to peoples homes, preferably within walking distance.
The central focus of these neighborhoods includes a public community center with a plaza or green; a transit stop where one can embark on travel outside of the neighborhood; and the retail/business core.
Staying Connected
Streets are laid out as an interconnected network forming coherent blocks where building entrances front the street rather than fronting parking lots. The connectivity of these neighborhoods provides options for getting around and tends to relieve congestion within the site. Streets are designed to accommodate not only automobile traffic but pedestrian and bicycle traffic as well; thus giving people a realistic choice of travel modes between uses.
Living
Such communities also include a wide spectrum of housing options that enable people of a broad range of incomes and ages to live within a single neighborhood so that, for example, one does not necessary have to move out of their neighborhood and leave their neighbors behind just because they wish to reduce or increase their housing size, as, for example, what might happen when one starts a new family or retires.
Open spaces, such as parks, playgrounds, and greenbelts, are not only provided within the central core, but also provided in convenient locations throughout a traditional neighborhood. Some examples of Traditional Neighborhoods within Florida include Miami Lakes, Abacoa, Seaside, Winter Park, Watercolor and Celebration.
